Buckanay Farm

Alderton, Suffolk (TM 356424)

This pit, approximately 1.5 km northeast of Alderton, exposes about 7.5 m of Red Crag; a borehole adjacent to the pit proved 11.9 m of Red Crag resting on London Clay at -2.8m OD. In the western face of the pit a cross-stratified unit with alternating fine- and coarse-grained foreset laminations is succeeded by a shelly unit comprising a single large cross-bed almost 5 m thick with a pebbly base. Vertical burrows preserved in ferruginous sand are a feature of the air-weathered faces of the pit.
