Broom Covert

Butley, Suffolk (TM 370494)

This pit currently exposes about 7 m of Red Crag but boreholes have proved the presence of almost 18 m of Red Crag in this area. The base of the section shows up to 1.5 m of planar-tabular, cross-bedded sand with foresets alternately of shell-rich and shell-free sand. A complex cross-bedded unit, containing fewer and more comminuted shells overlies the basal beds. Laterally impersistent mud layers form ripple drapes near the boundary between the basal and upper units.
