Waldringfield Heath

Suffolk (TM 257447)

Situated 2 km west of Waldringfield, this large, recently active pit exposes ‘Newbournian’ Red Crag overlain by glacial sands. Borehole evidence form the area has proved the presence of approximately 13 m of Red Crag resting unconformably on London Clay at around 7.3 m OD. Spoil material produced by excavations into the pit floor contains phosphatic pebbles, phosphatised shark teeth and flint cobbles from the basal lag of the Red Crag. The exposed part of the Red Crag comprises cross-bedded sands rich in mollusc shell, except in the decalcified upper levels of the pit.
